What is a donor-advised fund (DAF)?

A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a philanthropic giving vehicle like a charitable savings account. It provides an immediate tax benefit to you and allows you to easily support Bulamu Healthcare and other charities of your choice over time. Generally, you can invest cash and appreciated securities, as well as other assets that Bulamu may not be able to accept as a direct gift.

How do donor-advised funds work?

DAFs can be easily set up through your financial institution or a community foundation to serve as a flexible charitable giving vehicle. For more information on how to establish a DAF, contact your community foundation or financial advisor.

Why are donor-advised funds used?

  • Eliminates capital gains on donated stock. Giving accounts have the potential to grow, possibly providing additional funding when you are ready to make a gift.
  • Easy to turn your portfolio into an impactful gift to save lives.
  • You can make recurring gifts with ease, helping us bring lifesaving care to more people in need.

Note: Individual situations vary, so donors should consult their financial advisors.

We’ve made it easy to initiate your grant recommendation!

If you have an account at one of these popular charitable sponsors, make a grant today to our Federal EIN #47-4196766.

If you cannot find your financial institution or charitable sponsor in the links above, please let us know: amandal@bulamuhealthcare.org.

Donate up to $105,000 tax free directly from an IRA!

If you’re 70-1/2 or older, you can donate up to $105,000 per tax year directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to charities like Bulamu Healthcare. Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD), otherwise known as IRA charitable rollovers or IRA gifts, are a great way to support our lifesaving work by allowing your dollars to go further: QCDs may be excluded from your taxable income and qualify towards your required minimum distribution (RMD).

What are the IRA charitable rollover rules?

Here’s how a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) works:

  • You must be 70-1/2 or older at the time of gifting your IRA to charity.
  • You may distribute an amount, up to $105,000 in a calendar year, to one or more public charities, so long as it is completed by December 31 of that year.
  • Your IRA administrator must make the distribution directly to the charity, or you may write a check to the charity from your IRA checkbook. Funds that are withdrawn by you and then contributed do not qualify.

Benefits of making an IRA gift

QCDs count toward your required minimum distribution for the year. If you have to take your required minimum distribution but you don’t want or need the funds, QCDs are a good way to distribute the amount out of the IRA. As an added benefit, you’ll avoid paying income tax on your gross income up to $105,000.

Are there any QCD restrictions?

Per IRS regulations, QCDs cannot be made to a donor advised fund (DAF). A QCD can be made to your sponsoring 501(c)(3) organization if there are programs that you can fund outside of your DAF. Such purposes include general support for the charity or for other programs they may maintain outside of their role as a DAF sponsor.

For additional information on QCDs and DAFs, please contact your financial advisor.

How to make an IRA qualified charitable distribution

Here are the steps to take to make a gift from your IRA:

  • Contact your IRA administrator and instruct that person to transfer funds to the charity you designate.
  • Help us credit your gift and thank you by having your IRA administrator include your full name and mailing address on the gift. Also, have your administrator note that the transfer is an IRA Qualified Charitable Distribution.
  • If you’d like to make a QCD gift, your financial institution should make the check out to “Bulamu Healthcare” and identify you as the donor by name and address.

They can mail the check to:

Bulamu Healthcare
Attn: Development
1933 Waverley St.
Palo Alto, CA 94301

If your financial institution cannot include your full name and address with the check, please email us at amandal@bulamuhealthcare.org notifying us of your gift, so that we can identify your donation when it arrives.

Why consider donating appreciated stocks?

Gifting stock is a simple and powerful way to support the lives that Bulamu Healthcare teams are assisting every day. It also offers you several financial benefits:

  • You can easily donate appreciated stocks, bonds, or mutual funds
  • The total value of the stock upon transfer is tax-deductible
  • There is no obligation to pay any capital gains taxes on the appreciation

Note: Individual situations vary so donors should consult their advisors

For information to make a gift of stock or wire transfer, please contact the Bulamu Healthcare at amandal@bulamuhealthcare.org.

Many employers will match your donation and double the impact of your lifesaving gift!

What is a matching gift and how do companies match donations?

A matching gift is part of a company’s philanthropic initiatives that reward charitable donations. It occurs when an employee donates to a non-profit organization and notifies the employer, then employer will also donate to that organization. Companies will sometimes also match donations made by spouses, retirees, and board members.

Matching gifts are tax deductible for company and individual donations.

Donate through payroll deduction

Many companies will also let you set up automatic, tax-deductible donations from your paycheck. It’s a no-fuss way to donate, and it gives our teams the reliable support they need to be ready at a moment’s notice.

Reach out to your employer’s Human Resources or Corporate Social Responsibility team to ask how you can sign up for donations through payroll deductions.

Providing for Your Inheritors and Bulamu

What is a charitable lead trust?

A charitable lead trust allows you to support the life changing work of Bulamu Healthcare while preserving assets for your loved ones. You transfer cash, securities, or other assets to a trust. The trustee invests the assets, providing annual payments to Bulamu for a period of time that you select. When the trust terminates, the remaining amount is paid to you or your inheritors with the benefit of a reduced transfer tax.

The trust may be a charitable lead annuity (fixed payments) or a charitable lead unitrust (fixed percentage).

What are the benefits of a charitable lead trust?

  • Reduction in transfer tax on the amount passing to your inheritors
  • Appreciation in trust value passes to your heirs free of gift and estate tax
  • Control over when your beneficiaries inherit trust assets
