In Memoriam: Christine Russell

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Christine Russell, a dedicated member of Bulamu Healthcare’s Board of Directors since 2017.

Christine served with distinction during a transformative period for our organization, helping guide Bulamu from its early days as a startup to becoming a nationally recognized healthcare partner in Uganda. Her financial expertise and ethical leadership were instrumental as we grew from a budget of less than $100,000 in 2017 to raising $1.8 million in 2024.

As a valued member of our Finance & Audit Committee, Christine’s guidance was crucial to our successful completion of six annual audits. Her approach to complex challenges was perhaps best summarized in her own words: “Simplicity is complexity resolved. My guide to life.”

Christine was an early supporter of Bulamu through her friendship with co-founder Jim Balassone, sharing his passion for our mission from the beginning. Her warmth, wisdom, and unwavering commitment touched everyone who had the privilege of working with her. Her positive spirit and incisive insights during board meetings helped shape Bulamu’s growth and impact on hundreds of thousands of patients across Uganda.

Beyond her work with Bulamu, Christine was a respected leader in Silicon Valley, serving as a technology CFO and board member for multiple organizations where she was known for her visionary leadership and generous mentorship.

The entire Bulamu family extends our deepest condolences to Christine’s husband, Jim, and all her loved ones. We are forever grateful for her years of service and the lasting legacy she leaves behind.

Christine’s memory will continue to inspire our work to transform healthcare for people living in poverty.
