Dr. Djordje (“Joe”) Gikic, MD, MPH

Dr. Djordje (Djo) Gikic is a public health physician with 20 years of experience, most recently serving on the Independent Review Committee that evaluates country funding requests for Gavi, the global public-private alliance for vaccine research. He works with the Belgian government bilateral agency Enabel as health strategy and policy advisor and managing the Results-Based Financing scheme. After graduating from medical school in Geneva, Djo moved to Baltimore where he completed a residency in family medicine followed by earning a Master of Public Health and a preventive medicine fellowship at Johns Hopkins University. After working with the World Bank on health reform and WHO on immunization, he then joined the management consulting firm McKinsey, where he worked for a range of government and private clients on health financing and health reform/insurance questions. About ten years ago, he moved to Rwanda to serve as Country Director for Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), working on health system strengthening, especially the Human Resources for Health program. After a few years, he helped a Partners In Health affiliate, Pivot, establish a new branch in Madagascar with the objective of building a model health district. Djo’s broad African public health experience also includes working on health resource tracking in Ethiopia.
