Dr. Yvonne Vaucher, MD, MPH
Dr. Yvonne Vaucher recently retired as a full-time attending, board-certified neonatologist at the University of California, San Diego, where she directed the High-Risk Infant Neurodevelopment Follow-Up program for more than 25 years. In 1993, Yvonne obtained an MPH in International Health from Johns Hopkins, and she continues to be actively involved with study design and epidemiologic data analysis within her academic Neonatology Division at UCSD.
Since 1998, Yvonne has been a neonatal/perinatal consultant for the Department of Pediatrics and Child Health at Makerere University/Mulago Hospital in Kampala, Uganda, the national referral and professional training center for the country. She travels annually for 5-6 weeks to Uganda where she works closely with the residents, medical staff and nursing staff in the Special Care Baby Units (NICUs) at Mulago Hospital and Kawempe Referral to improve survival and quality of care. Kawempe Hospital is now the major obstetrical service and teaching hospital for Makerere University, with more than 30,000 deliveries per year, resulting in 3500 neonatal intensive care admissions. She also works with the District Hospitals in Northern and rural Uganda to develop newborn care facilities and with local communities to improve neonatal outcomes at all levels of care.
